Helping Laos: Meth in, Children out

In the vicinity of Vang Vieng in the outskirts of a 200-meter-wide village the Sae Lao project is located. Sae Lao is a restaurant by day and school by evening. During the day, the restaurant functions as any other. On the other hand, it dedicates all its profit to fund the amenities that are available for the teachers and students. I served there as a volunteer for a week.

Laos: the everlasting effects of war

The effects of the Vietnam war in Laos are still noticeable nowadays. With that in mind I decided to explore the country riding through rice fields, engaging in traditional celebrations, planting rice at sunset and exchanging knowledge with locals. With pen, paper and a camera I discovered something about Laos that I wasn’t expecting.

Tanzania: The children

I paid special attention to children on my trip to this part of the world. It seems to me that, in between the misery they live in, they make up a whole different world with their imaginations. They are not unhappy. They suffer from an unfair world but their innocence and energy displace the hardship of their living environments. I have seen diseased children too, with encephalitis, missing arms or limbs, hunger, malformations and a lot of malnutrition. On the other hand I haven’t seen a kid cry or complain.

At sunset we stopped and watched the sunset next to the camels. The view was amazing. The beautiful untouched surface of the sand shaped static waves that resembled a rugged bed sheet.

Camping in the Egyptian Sahara

A thick fog of stars of different colors formed a train from one side of the sky to the other. Millions of stars shined above me like never before. Surrounded by silence, the sense of complete insignificance subjugated me. It is at that moment when all living human beings under the same circumstances would look up and say: “How would it be possible to be alone in the universe?”. I asked myself the same question.

Backpacking through Pyramids

Throughout the course of two days I visited the whole complex by foot. It is worth to go by foot instead of camel or horse. By foot you acquire a better idea of the true size of everything. On the other hand, by horse one would only see them for an hour. I took my time and explored the whole area by myself. Sometimes a little bribe to some officers was needed in order to get "special access" to some areas…

Let's talk coffee: The Chemex.

It's Monday morning, 07:00 AM. I wake up knowing that I have a long and difficult week in front of me. I slowly start making my breakfast. I put water on boil and then I grind some Corazon beans, a dark roast mix from Uganda, Latin America and Indonesia. I am thinking about the day in front of me, trying to organize my tasks…

Chiang Mai: Why is the coffee in this town so good?

Chiang Mai is a quiet city, is not that big and it has around 130k inhabitants. Although it is a tourist hotspot, it is not even near the amount of voyagers Bangkok or other cities receive.
